DID YOU KNOW THAT…

1.1 million North Carolinians had no health insurance in 1999?

36% of NC renters were unable to afford a two-bedroom apartment in 2000?

27.7% of U.S. low-income households experienced food insecurity in 1999?

There are about 6,000 families on the NC childcare subsidy waiting list?

1.1 MILLION WORKING FAMILIES IN NORTH CAROLINA… CAN'T AFFORD TO MEET THEIR MOST BASIC NEEDS!!!

WHAT'S THAT YOU SAY?

"SOMEBODY OUGHT TO DO SOMETHING!"

YOU are that somebody…..

Here Are Some Recommendations:

1. Government Should Set the Example

Pay all state government employees and employees of state contractors a living wage.

Pass local living wage ordinances that require a living wage be paid to all local government employees and employees of local government contractors.

Monitor the state's progress toward paying all workers a living wage.

2. Businesses Must Adequately Support Their Workers

Raise the state minimum wage

3. Ensure Tax Policies Support Low-Wage Workers

Strengthen wage requirements for companies to receive tax incentives

Adopt a state earned income tax credit

4. Ensure Families Have Access to the Basic Necessities

Update public assistance programs to better serve working families

Ensure that working families have access to health insurance

Increase the supply of affordable housing

Adequately fund the public education system

Fully fund North Carolina's system of early child care and education

Curb abusive lending and sales practices that prey upon vulnerable consumers.
