Education and Law Project Menu

The North Carolina Education and Law Project seeks to improve the public education system in North Carolina so that it better servers low-income and minority children. The project is nationally recognized for: its advocacy efforts which have produced legislation to reduce class size in the primary grades and improve parental involvement in public schools, its research on issues such as alternative education, best practices for elementary education, and the achievement gap;and its training through the North Carolina Parent Studies Program which builds the capacity of low-income parent to become actively involved in school governance matters.

LEANDRO IV - Final Decision April 2002 (Word Document 457 KB)

No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
The new federal education bill, "No Child Left Behind Act of 2001," is being identified as the largest overhaul of the federal role in education and is accompanied by the largest increase in federal school funding. Although there are many questions to be answered about the significance of this bill, it is clear that the bill will have a tremendous impact on North Carolina's public schools and public schools across the nation.

To help shed some light on this law as regulations are written, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has created a special Web site to help educators and public school partners better understand the bill's key provisions, provide answers to commonly asked questions, and make available information that can be used when discussing this legislation. This special Web site can be accessed by going to DPI's home page, http://www.ncpublicschools.org and clicking on No Child Left Behind, the first item under "What's Going On," or by going directly to http://www.ncpublicschools.org/esea/
