The Poverty Law Litigation Project works to ensure that disadvantaged individuals have access to high quality legal assistance in civil matters that cannot be handled by Federally funded Legal Services Programs due to new Congressional restrictions on those organizations. The project provides direct representation to individuals or classes of low-income and working poor people in major cases that will have a substantial impact onlow-income and working poor prople throughout North Carolina. The unit utilizes private attorneys to represent low-income clients and assist its efforts to handle Legal Sevices-restricted cases. Additionally, the project supports the delivery of high-quality legal assistance to low-income individuals on a wide range of civil matters by providing advice and assistance in individual cases and running training programs and a poverty law clearinghouse for Legal Services advocates and pro bono attorneys.
